GORAKHPUR

Gorakhpur is a city situated along the banks of the Rapti River in the northeastern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It has a population of 673,446. Positioned near the Nepal border, Gorakhpur is 273 kilometres east of the state capital, Lucknow. Serving as the administrative headquarters of Gorakhpur district and Gorakhpur division, the city is renowned for the Gorakhnath Math, a temple dedicated to the medieval saint Gorakshanath. Gorakhpur holds significance as a religious center with historical ties to Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It derived its name from the medieval saint Gorakshanath, and the Gorakhnath Temple remains the seat of the Nath sect. The city boasts numerous historic Buddhist sites and is home to the Gita Press, a prominent publisher of Hindu religious texts. In the 20th century, Gorakhpur played a pivotal role in the Indian independence movement. Today, it is not only a religious and historical hub but also a thriving business center. It houses the headquarters of the North Eastern Railways (www.nerailway.gov.in) and features an industrial area, GDA (Gorakhpur Development Authority), located 15 km from the old town.

ODOP Terracotta

Terracotta is a unique and special kind of ceramic craft. The term is commonly used for sculptures made in earthenware, as well as various utilitarian products, including vessels (notably flower pots), water and wastewater pipes, roofing tiles, bricks, and surface embellishment in building construction. What sets it apart from other terracotta crafts is its emphasis on ornamentation, the use of natural colors/dyes, and experimentation with innovative shapes.
